Realnet has chosen to support a charity based in our local area that works mainly in the East of England. YOPEY Befriender brings two generations together. Established in 2012, in normal times the organisation runs befriending schemes where schoolchildren visit elderly residents in care homes and particularly those with dementia. The scheme helps young people with life skills, fulfilment and helps to improve their applications to further education. For the care home residents, it's vital companionship in what can be quite a lonely place, when many have very few or infrequent visitors.

What do YOPEY do?

In the last two years, YOPEY have adapted by inviting schools to take part in four ‘virtual’ initiatives to support care home residents during the pandemic, these include:

  • Writing open letters to care home residents via YOPEY.
  • Compiling activities to do, such as crosswords, word searches and riddles.
  • Short, variety show style videos to entertain care home residents.
  • Creating art to decorate care homes.

They aim to return to face-to-face befriending once it is safe to do so.
