Facebook Scraps Grey Verification Tick

2nd Dec 2019

Social media giants Facebook have made a significant change to their Business or Organisation pages by removing the grey verification badge that was introduced in 2015.

The badge, which businesses could apply for to indicate a verified and authentic status, required applicants to complete a number of verification steps.

If successful, the business’s page would have the checkmark added to their account next to the page name.

Causing confusion

According to Facebook, the badge was “causing confusion” amongst users, who were not sure what the checkmark represented.

Next steps for businesses

In light of the recent change, businesses will now need to use alternative methods to represent their legitimacy, including:

  • Ensuring all business information is up to date and correct
  • Clickthroughs to the company website are in place
  • Ensuring there is a current profile and cover photo
  • Checking that contact information is available and correct.

Facebook also recommend that businesses post regularly, showing that they are active and operational.
