Google have announced that Google Maps will be available offline.

Google have announced that Google Maps will be available offline. So what does this mean?

If you’re going on a trip you’ll be able to download the relevant maps in advance and then you don’t need to rely on a good data connection. This could be even more useful when you’re going abroad. Download maps of the area you’re going to and you won’t have to pay for roaming data charges to find your directions when you’re there. You could even use your iPad for navigation when you’re out and about, without a data connection.

Interestingly too, the downloaded maps will also include Google Places information. So you can find useful information about places including store opening times and contact information.

This new feature is gradually rolling out with the latest version of Google Maps for Android and is coming soon to iOS.
