Google My Business changes, plus more support in Search and Maps

19th Jan 2022

One of Google’s long-standing and highly useful free business tools, Google My Business, has undergone a name change as Google looks to shift the onus of profile management for SMEs more into Google Search and Google Maps.

Google My Business is now known as Google Business Profile, a simple explainer name to describe exactly what the updated function is. By the end of 2022 the Google My Business app will be removed completely, and business owners are now encouraged to manage their single business listings in Search or in Maps directly.

The Google My Business platform will evolve into Google Business Profile and be targeted more at larger businesses with multiple locations, or at digital marketing companies managing multiple business accounts, using the Business Profile Manager tool.

The new features of Google Business Profile include:

  • The ability to claim and verify your Google Business Profile directly in Search and Maps
  • Direct messaging capability from Search
  • The ability to control message read receipts in Search and Maps

It is likely that new features and integrations will be added as the new rollout continues, including for paid media campaign set up and management.
