Does WordPress Automatically Convert Images to WebP Format?

WebP Conversion is Not Automatic

No, WordPress does not automatically convert images to WebP format. However, it supports uploading and displaying WebP images (since version 5.8 way back in July 2021).

You can add automatic conversion with plugins or CDN (Content Delivery Network) integration and this is something we have implemented for a number of clients. Remember that it’s important to use a system that delivers WebP images only to browsers that support them.
